I caught an interesting show this evening while on the road in Chicago. Mystery Diagnosis on TLC.
It was about a girl named Jessica who would mysteriously fall asleep for 10 days at a time. All diagnoses by traditional medicine could not find a problem. Friends of the family saw a show on TV and called them mentioning that they thought Jessica's symptoms were similar. Her mom got the transcript from the show from the web. After confirming that the symptoms were similar, she looked up this doctor at NYU who had worked with patients with Kleine Levin Syndrome. There have been only 200 cases ever. 90% grow out of it. The Dr. mentioned it is a reflection on the education system for our medical professionals. Moral of the story: You can't give up when trying to find out the answer to a medical problem. Also traditional medicine can sometimes misdiagnose something like this as depression, and medicate heavily to our detriment. Interesting, and a good show. |
